Paul McLaughlin Workshop & Lathe

Uncle Paul McLaughlin's Workshop and Lathe

My Uncle Paul McLaughlin had his workshop in his garage in Claremont, CA.His workshop included a wood lathe which I was given by my cousin Kelly after he passed away.Later, after I had it in my garage, my brother John came to visit and we talked about the family woodworkers.  I was more into computers and didn't want saw dust all over my garage so I gave the lathe to John.  He used it in his garage in Goose Lake, IL but later decided to attach it to a portable stand so he could do projects outside and let the saw dust and wood shaving go into the grass.

The Library Sale

The Library Sale

Guy, Guy's neighbor, has a sister who is active with the Dallas Center local library.  The wanted to raise money to expand the Library and needed item to sell.  Gus brought his sister over to Guy's and Guy let her pick a few wood projects to be sold in the Library sale.  It was to be a silent auction.
Here are some of the results of that sale of seven of Guy's Wood Projects. Most of the items sold for hundreds of dollars so they raised about $1,500 from his gift to the Library Fund. The sale was held in November of 2014.

My brother John git my Uncle Paul's lathe after he passed away.  He set it up and began experimenting with the lathe.  Here are some of the first wood items he created using Uncle Paul McLaughlin's lathe.  The lathe had to be transported from Claremont, California via Temecula, California to Goose Lake, Illinois.

Making your own Wood Slabs

Making your own wood slabs

If you get a huge chunk of tree you can cut it into slabs and use the wood slabs to make wood projects.  His is an example of using a large cross cut saw and chain saw to make thick plank slabs for a part of a tree.  It shows the resultant wood slabs anf then some of the wood projects that were made from them.

I put together a series of photos that illustrate the types and quantity of woodworking project Guy has done over the past 20 or so years (1997 - 2017) since he retired from Westinghouse and moved to Dallas Center, Iowa.  His garage is very roomy as he has only one car so he built his wood shop there.
His house is filled with the results of his work and here is some of his vast collection.
